It can be a good idea for management to appoint a person or department in the company to be responsible for preparing the company climate strategy and for coordinating and evaluating its implementation.

An interdisciplinary working group

Normally, various departments or functions in a company influence its climate impact. Depending on the size of the company, it may be a good idea to appoint an interdisciplinary working group or, as a minimum, to have an ongoing dialogue across the organisation. It might be relevant to involve the following functions:

 

Production

Most manufacturing businesses include energy efficiency improvement in production as an important element in their climate strategies. It is highly relevant to involve one or more production staff members to ensure that realistic targets are set and that the necessary support for implementing the strategy is available.

 

Product development

Does part of your climate strategy aim at improving energy efficiency in your product portfolio or reducing consumption of materials included in your production?If so, it might be relevant to involve staff members with responsibility for product development and innovation.

 

Building officer

The building officer can help lay down a strategy for how the company can reduce energy consumption in its buildings, e.g. by regulating temperature or through insulation.

 

Finance

Involving staff from the finance department is relevant with an eye on preparing a realistic budget for climate strategy implementation and for determining the repayment period for any investments in energy-efficient technologies.

 

Purchasing

The purchasers should be involved if you aim at limiting greenhouse gas emissions caused by your suppliers.

 

Sales and marketing

Sales and marketing can make a special contribution to assessing how your climate strategy can be used for marketing purposes and whether sales will increase by advertising the reduction in greenhouse gases customers stand to achieve by buying your products rather than rival products.

 

HR

Involving the HR department can be essential in terms of involving staff members so they are motivated to reducing CO2 emissions. For instance, you can involve them by having them turn off computers and lights at the end of the working day.

 

Communication

Communicating your climate strategy forms a key element in the process. It is a good idea to involve the communications manager at an early stage. In that way, your climate communication and general communication and marketing will go hand in hand.
