Step 5: Action plan

Step 5: Preparing an action plan

Step 5: Preparing an action plan

An action plan describing specific climate initiatives taken by the company should be prepared as a central element in the climate strategy.

The climate strategy must give priority to some key action areas over others. An action plan is a tool for managing and structuring the work to meet the climate targets set. This means, for instance, that you describe the prioritised initiatives, including any relevant deadlines and responsible staff member/function.

An action plan may consist of a few measures aimed at improving the efficiency of the company’s electricity and heat consumption. The action plan may also be more comprehensive and include employee business travels, goods transport and CO2 emissions of suppliers and customers.

What initiatives to prioritise?

When selecting the specific initiatives, you can base your selection on one or more of the following criteria:

• Expected CO2 reduction

• Expected investments

• Expected repayment period for investments

• Customer and investor expectations

• Possibility of receiving positive press coverage

• Expected available resources

Communicating your initiatives

As part of the action plan, you should consider how to communicate your climate strategy to the surrounding world. Reference is made to the section “Climate communication” for inspiration.

You should also assess internal communication requirements. Active internal communication can significantly contribute to ensuring knowledge sharing, ownership and motivation in the organisation. A more ambitious step would be to consider whether it is necessary to build up more targeted capacity through staff training.
