Raw materials and other materials

In your efforts to reduce the overall climate impact of your company, it would be a good idea to look at the possibilities of:

• Reducing the consumption of materials manufactured in processes generating many greenhouse gases

• Finding suppliers who are aware of new methods for extracting raw materials with lower emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases

Using alternative materials causing lower CO2 emissions. In this context, making a life cycle assessment (LCA) of the various materials is a good idea. An LCA compares CO2 emissions in the production, use and disposal phases and can help the company select the best materials. Additional information is available from LCA Center Denmark.

Reduction potential

The following table shows the differences in CO2 emissions for a few new (virgin) raw materials compared to recovered raw materials. According to the table, significant reductions can be obtained by recovery.

Getting started

Own consumption of raw materials such as wood, metal. To obtain an idea of potential CO2 reductions in your consumption of raw materials, it might be useful to appoint a working group consisting of the buyer and the person responsible for the company’s energy consumption/climate impact. They will identify the areas to concentrate on.

Suppliers’ consumption of raw materials

You can start by having a dialogue with your suppliers. Perhaps they have already considered this aspect or even taken measures.
