One way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from waste is to prevent unnecessary waste volumes and make it easier to reuse all or parts of the product.


It is possible to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from waste disposal through:


• Energy utilisation from waste incineration: Denmark uses the surplus heat

from waste incineration. Replacing heat generation based on fossil fuels

with surplus heat from waste incineration reduces CO2 emissions.


• Reuse: Some waste is sorted at source with a view to reuse, e.g.

electronics waste, paper and glass. In this way, reuse of raw materials

increases and greenhouse gas emissions fall. This form of sorting and

reuse is also an effective way of limiting greenhouse gas emissions.

Waste prevention

In spite of the potential from reusing raw materials and other materials, waste prevention is often the key to lowering CO2 emissions.


This concept covers activities:

Minimising resource consumption per unit produced – and thus waste – through efficiency improvement or lean management.


Extending product life and thus lowering the need for new products. This could be achieved, for instance, through product development and product service schemes.


Promoting direct reuse of resources contained in the product by manufacturing new products, thereby minimising the need for adding new resources.


Getting started

If your production is located in Denmark, you can contact your waste collector, local authority or Waste Centre Denmark. They will tell you about waste treatment of your products and what waste fractions can be reused. If you undertake production in other places, it might be a good idea also to contact waste collectors, authorities or knowledge institutions in the relevant countries.
